Craven was born in Cleveland, Ohio, son of Caroline (nÃÆ' Â © e Miller) and Paul Eugene Craven. She grew up in a tight Baptist family. Craven holds a bachelor's degree in English and psychology from Wheaton College in Illinois and a master's degree in philosophy and writing from Johns Hopkins University.

Craven taught English at Westminster College and was a professor of humanities at Clarkson College of Technology (later named Clarkson University) in Potsdam, New York. He also taught at Madrid-Waddington High School in Madrid, New York. During this time, he bought a used 16 mm film camera and started making short films. When his friend Tom Chapin told him about the envoy's position at a New York City post-production company run by his brother, future folk-rock star Harry Chapin, Craven moved to Manhattan. His first creative work in the film industry was as a voice editor for the Chapin firm.

Given his initial training, Craven said in 1994, "Harry is a fantastic film editor and industrial producer, and he taught me the Chapin [editing] method: 'Nuts and bolts, nuts and bolts! Get rid of shit!'" Craven went on to become assistant manager of the company, and into the editing of the movie with You've Got to Walk It Like You Talk It or You Lose That Beat (1971).

Directing and writing careers

Craven left the academic world for a more profitable role of porn film director. In the documentary Inside Deep Throat, Craven said on camera he made "a lot of X-rated hardcore movies" under a pseudonym. While his role in Deep Throat is concealed, much of his original work is known to involve writing, editing a movie, or both. Craven's first feature film as director is The Last House on the Left , released in 1972. Craven hopes the movie will only be shown in only a few theaters, which he says "gives me the freedom to be outrageous, and goes to the area which I normally would not get into, and not worry about my family hearing about it, or being destroyed. "Eventually the film was screened much more broadly than he had expected leaving him excommunicated for the content of the film.

After a negative experience of Last House , Craven tried to get out of the horror genre, and started writing a non-horror film with his partner, Bill S Cunningham, nothing to attract any financial support. Finally, based on a friend's advice about the ease of filmmaking in the Nevada desert, Craven began writing a new horror film based on that location. The resulting film, The Hills Have Eyes, cemented Craven as a "horror movie director" with Craven noting "It soon became clear that I would not do anything else except it was frightening,"

Craven often collaborated with Sean S. Cunningham. In Craven's debut feature, The Last House on the Left , Cunningham serves as a producer. They collect all their resources and make $ 90,000. Then, in Craven's most famous film, A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Cunningham directed one of the chase scenes, though he was not credited. Their characters, Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, appeared together in the slasher film Freddy vs Jason (2003) with Cunningham acting as producer, while screenwriter Victor Miller was credited as "The Creator of Character". Then, in The Last House on the Left remake (2009), Cunningham and Craven share production credits.

Craven has a hand in launching the career of actor Johnny Depp by throwing him on A Nightmare on Elm Street , the main role of Depp's first film.

Though known for directing horror/thriller movies, he has worked on two films outside of this genre: Music of the Heart (1999), and as one of 22 directors responsible for Paris, je t'aime (2006).

Craven created the Coming of Rage, a series of five comic books, with the author of comic book 30 Days of Night , Steve Niles. The series was released in digital form in 2014 by Liquid Comics with a print edition scheduled for debut in October 2015.

Movie style

Craven's work tends to share a general exploration of the nature of reality. Nightmare on Elm Street , for example, deals with the consequences of dreams in real life. New Nightmare has actress Heather Langenkamp playing herself as she is haunted by the movie villain she once starred. At one point in the film, audiences looked at Wes Craven's word processor a script he had written, which included a conversation he had just done with Heather - as if the script was being written when the action was revealed. The Serpent and the Rainbow describes a man who can not distinguish between dreams and nightmares.

In Scream , characters often refer to horror movies that are similar to their situation, and at one point, Billy Loomis told his girlfriend that life is just a great movie. This concept is emphasized in the sequel, as a stalker replicating a new movie event about the Woodsboro murder (Woodsboro being a fictional city where Scream is set) takes place on my Scream . Scream includes scenes that mention urban legends about Richard Gere and sex acts involving hamsters. Craven stated in an interview that he received a call from an agent who told him that if he left the scene, he would never work again. The last film he directed before his death was Scream 4 .
