Hank Laventhol (1927-2001) is an American painter and major printmaker who started his career in Europe. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Laventhol graduated from Yale University with a BA in Fine Arts. He undertook graduate studies at Columbia University and went into business in New York City. At the age of 32, he traveled to Europe to continue additional studies in the arts. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy, and eventually spent 10 years in Europe, making his home in Mallorca, Spain. He has four solo shows in London and a one-man show in Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, DÃÆ'¼sseldorf, Brussels, Florence, ZÃÆ'¼rich, Lausanne and Barcelona. In the United States his work is seen in five solo performances at the Bodley Gallery in New York City. He also shows in other major US cities.

Laventhol's work is in corporate and private collections, museums and libraries, including National Art Gallery, Washington, DC, Yale University Art Gallery, Nasher Art Museum at Duke University Art Museum, Durham, N.Carolina, The Print Collection New York Public Library, The Philadelphia Free Library, and La BibliothÃÆ'¨que nationale de France in Paris. Laventhol has been listed in Benezit, the definitive Directory of Painters and Maket Makers.

In addition to painting and sculpting in various media, Laventhol publishes editions of etchings and aquatints colors, a precise and exact process that gives her various colors and textures, unmatched by any other etching technique. He has two etching pressures and pulls his own fingerprints. Publishers include Associated American Artists, New York Graphic Society, Original Print Collectors Group Ltd., Pierre Chave, France and George Visat, Paris, who also publish graphics editions, among others, Renà © Å © Magritte, Man Ray, Roberto Matta.

Critics call Laventhol a surrealist. Artists, however, would rather regard his work as dealing with fantasy realism.
