Description

Located just to the west of the Prince's Gate at the eastern end of Exhibition Place, it was previously the location of the streetcar and open spaces. The new building takes over the front along Prince's Boulevard and connects to the existing Coliseum and Industrial Buildings (also known as Agricultural Enclosures), creating a large interconnected exhibition complex. The southern entrance of the existing Coliseum is destroyed and integrated into the new complex. The tram circle was moved to the north of the complex. The open space was formerly the location of the Engineering and Electrical Building, opened in 1928 and demolished in 1972.

Designed by the Zeidler Partnership Architects and Dunlop-Farrow Architects architecture team, the building officially opened on April 3, 1997, with its first show being a National Home Show. It has seven exhibition halls with one million square feet (93,000 m 2 ) exhibition space. Four of the hall are separated by a removable wall to create a configurable space. In addition, the Coliseum and Horse Palace can be integrated into an exhibit. It is the largest indoor exhibition center in Canada. The project cost is CA $ 180 million, the cost is shared equally by the governments of Toronto, Ontario and Canada.

The entire southern front is a long hall, connecting exhibition halls with various offices. Most of the southern wall of the hall is glass, giving light to the entrance to the exhibition hall which has no windows. At the eastern end of the hall is a small open exhibit hall, sometimes used as an art gallery, used by CNE for cat and dog shows. At the eastern end of the hall is a "living wall." Below the main exhibit hall is an underground parking garage, providing 1,300 spaces, connected to the Flow Center to the south with an underground tunnel. Along the top of the hall in the tower above the entrance are four rotating floodlights that are illuminated when the show is held at the Center. The southern external front differs along its length. The eastern part imitates the style of the Automotive Building across the street, using masonry and column pairs, while the western part is steel and glass, described as "flamboyant futurism".

To the north a new addition is the "Heritage Court" hall, oriented west-east, which connects Coliseum, Annex and new additions. It measures 50,000 square feet (4,600m 2 ). The west entrance to the complex is at the west end of the hall and serves as the main entrance to the Coliseum. Its entrance is mostly made of glass and has a canopy extending to the west, where a canopy extending northward, between the Horse Palace and the Coliseum, provides shelter for people coming from the TTC circle to the north. The original southern exterior of the Coliseum and Industrial Building, dating back to the 1920s, is preserved in the hall. The Heritage Court is located on the TTC rail line that separates the Coliseum and Industrial buildings from Engineering and Electrical Building. Four of the original "Industrial Sculptures" that adorn the Facades of Electrical and Technical Buildings were installed in the Court of Inheritance.

Annex buildings are used for storing cattle and small livestock during Winter Fair and CNE. Judging is done in a small circle in the Appendix, in the Coliseum and in the judging area in the new add-in. This area is also used by trade shows for demonstration rooms.

In 2005, the CNE Board of Directors signed a ten-year agreement with Direct Energy Inc. to sponsor the name of the center, effective in March 2006. The agreement pays a fee for a reserve fund used to keep the center in good repair. In 2014, a portion of Direct Energy is sold to EnerCare Inc., including the central name-in-title. The agreement was recently extended for another ten years to end in 2026, valued at $ 7.5 million.

The Board of Governors of CNE and the City of Toronto intends to study the expansion of the facility. The proposed expansion will add an additional hall connected to the western end of the main building.
