DIRECTV Latin America is an American operator of a subscription television service in Latin America and is a subsidiary of DIRECTV (previously designated DirecTV). It produces TV content, and has multiple TV channels. This is one of the most popular pay TV services in Latin America along with Claro TV.

History

SKY Mexico was founded on July 25, 1996, a joint venture between British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB), News Corporation, Liberty Media and Grupo Televisa and then launched on December 15, 1996. In May 2000, the company expanded the rest of Latin America, Central America, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia but during the Argentine economic crisis, on July 10, 2002, with over 52,000 subscribers, Sky Argentina suspended all operations. During this decade, most of the Sky operations in Latin America were renamed DIRECTV, with the exception of Mexican and Brazilian operations, which in 2005 absorbed DirecTV which retained the Sky name.

DirecTV Chile

The Chilean subsidiary of DIRECTV Latin America, which is a satellite television system, has been operating in the country since 1994. DIRECTV bought SKY Chile and renamed it DIRECTV. It signed an agreement with GTD Manquehue to offer full service phones, television and internet across the country.

Illegal ad placement

On January 19, 2016, Environment Secretary BogotÃÆ'¡, sanctioned DIRECTV's Colombian subsidiary, Directv Colombia Ltda., With an amount of $ 118 million to place an unauthorized ad right from the city. The company violated Decree 959, 2000, which regulates where companies can place publicity publicly.

Offline canceled

On September 15, 2017, Reuters reported, citing anonymous sources, that AT & amp; T, owner of the US and Latin American DIRECTV division, has hired an advisor to consider offering Latin American DIRECTV on the public share market. The main motive cited as the need to reduce the debt burden AT & T will assume if it takes over Time Warner as planned. Since that date, the US Department of Justice filed a lawsuit to block the acquisition on antitrust basis, the trial is scheduled to begin on March 19, 2018 before Judge Leon of the US District Court for the District of Columbia, and a decision not expected before June-July. However, even if the transaction is blocked, AT & T may dispose of the division as not the core of its business. On April 19, 2018, the IPO was canceled.
