Histori

The Original Frontier Airlines (1950-1986) served Vernal for over 30 years. In 1950, Frontier operated the Douglas DC-3 flight from the airport with nonstop services to Salt Lake City and Rock Springs as well as straight away, no shuttle service changes to Denver, Billings, Casper, Laramie, and Cheyenne. In 1967, Frontier served Vernal with Convair 580 turboprop with nonstop flights to Salt Lake City and direct flights to Denver. At the same time, Frontier operates the Convair 580 "run milk" flight with Salt Lake City-Vernal-Moab-Grand Junction-Farmington-Gallup-Albuquerque-Silver City-Tucson-Phoenix route. Frontier still served Vernal during the late 1970s and early 1980s with Convair 580 uninterrupted flights to Salt Lake City and directly to Denver; however, when Frontier began switching to the all-jet fleet, service to Vernal was discontinued in 1982. Prior to the Frontier service, Challenger Airlines 1948 route map described Vernal as the proposed destination with service to Salt Lake City. In 1950, Challenger joined Arizona Airways and Monarch Airlines to form Frontier Airlines which then began service that year to Vernal.

A number of commuter airlines have also served Vernal for many years. In 1979, Transwestern Airlines competed with Frontier on the Salt Lake City route with Piper Aircraft twin prop plane. Water non-stop salmon service is operated also to Salt Lake City at one point. In 1983, Air Link Airlines operated directly, one stop flight to Denver via Hayden, CO or Rock Springs, WY with Turboprop Swearingen Metroliner. In 1985, SkyWest Airlines operated the Swearingen Metroliner supporting nonstop to Salt Lake City (SLC) as an independent airline. In 1987, SkyWest flew with non-stop Metroliner propjet service to SLC as Western Express through a code-sharing agreement with Western Airlines. In 1989, SkyWest has become a Delta Connection carrier passcode distribution passenger service for Delta Air Lines and continues to operate nonstop Metroliner services to Salt Lake City. Air Midwest, a subsidiary of Mesa Airlines that operates service to Vernal as West America Express, commenced a nonstop flight to Salt Lake City International Airport on July 2, 2006. In January 2008, the Great Lakes Aviation replaced Air Midwest and began operating the Beechcraft 1900D turboprop to Denver and on December 5, 2011, the Great Lakes began operations to Canyonlands Field in Moab, Utah as an extension of its Denver service. However, Great Lakes Airlines then ended its flight to Denver and stopped all services to Vernal.
