TLC (originally an initialism for The Learning Channel ) is an American cable and basic satellite television network owned by Discovery Inc. Initially focusing on educational and learning content, by the late 1990s, the network began to focus primarily into a series of realities that involved lifestyles, family life, and personal stories.

In February 2015, TLC was available for viewing in approximately 95 million American households (81.6% of households with cable television) in the United States.

Histori

1972-80: Riwayat awal

ACSN was privatized in 1980, and its name was changed to The Learning Channel in November of that year; the name was then shortened to "TLC." (NASA soon launched NASA TV as an internal substitute for ACSN.) The channel mostly features documentary content related to nature, science, history, current events, medicine, technology, cooking, home improvement, and other information-based topics. It is often approved to be more focused, more technical, and more academic than content that was broadcasted at that time on its rival, The Discovery Channel. This channel is geared to curious and narrow audiences during this time, and has a modest ranking except for the boating safety series Captain's Log with Captain Mark Gray (hosted by Mark Graves AKA Capt. Mark Gray, a USMC Vietnam Vet 1967-70, Entertainer (Escape Runner, Magician, and TV Writer/Producer/Host) - who works in multimedia (radio, newspaper, TV and Internet since 1974). Captain Log aired weekly in primetime on TLC from 1987 to 1990. It is achieved between 4.5 to 6 parts in the rankings and is the highest compensation series in TLC history with more than 30 times compensation from other TLC series Mark Graves AKA "Captain Mark Gray" is also allowed to sign annual contracts rather than quarterly, He decided not to seek a contract extension again when Discovery acquired TLC in 1990 and moved its operations from Virginia to Denver, Colorado.

In the early 1990s, The Learning Channel is a twin channel to the Financial News Network (FNN), which has 51 percent of channels with Infotechnology Inc. After FNN went bankrupt in 1991, the owner of Discovery Channel discussed to buy Learning Channel. Agreements were made with FNN and Infotech to buy their shares for $ 12.75 million. The nonprofit Appalachian Community Service Network has 35 percent network, and is also purchased.

The Learning Channel continued to focus primarily on learning and education programs until the 1990s, but began to show less educational and less focused events on popular consumption and mass marketing; this will be expanded.

TLC is still showing educational programs such as Paleoworld (prehistoric creatures), although more and more programs are beginning to be devoted to specific audiences for performances on subjects like home improvement ( HomeTime and Home Savvy are two of the first), arts and crafts, crime programs such as The New Detectives, medical programs (especially reality shows that show real patients) through the operation process), and other events which appeals to daylight audiences, especially housewives. This is an indication of major changes in programming content and target audience over the next few years.

1998-2006: "Life Unscripted ", new directions

Perhaps because of poor judgment from a narrow target audience, TLC began exploring new avenues beginning in the late 1990s, not emphasizing educational materials that support entertainment. "Ready Set Learn", the children's program block on the network, has slowly diminished over the years as the network deliberately directs viewers to the full range of children's programs on Discovery Kids. The block was dropped completely by the end of 2008, and the Cable in the Classroom program, intended to be recorded by teachers, had completely disappeared in the early 2000s.

In 1998, the channel began to distance itself from its original name "The Learning Channel", and instead began advertising on its own merely as "TLC". During this period, there was a major change in content, with most of the new programming directed to reality show drama and interior design. The great success of such shows as the Room of Commerce , Junkyard War , Wedding Story , and Baby Stories exemplified this new shift in programming toward larger performances.

This happened when Discovery itself was overhauling many of its own programs, introducing events like (which Discovery moved to TLC for a while). Many of the older programs that focus more on education can still be found sometimes scattered among other channels owned by Discovery Communications. Most of the current TLC programs are directed to drama or reality-based interests such as home design, emergency room or medical drama, extreme weather, law enforcement, calendaring, and human interest programs.

2006-08: "Live and learn"

On March 27, 2006, the network launched a new display and promotional campaign, deleted the "Life Unscripted" tag and introduced a new theme, "Live and learn", trying to reverse the network's dependence on decorating events and reality programming. As part of the new campaign, the channel's real name, "The Learning Channel", returns to occasional use within the promotion. New themes are also played in life lessons, many featured in advertising clips and network promotions. This campaign uses humor to attract target audiences in their 30s.

2008-present

In early March 2008, TLC launched a slightly fresher display and promotional campaign, along with a new slogan: "Life surprise". This new slogan came about as the TLC began to shift even more into personal stories, and away from the ever-dominating home improvement show. Programs that focus on family life become the channel's core. Jon & amp; Kate Plus 8, which in 2008 was the highest rated program in TLC, and Little People, Big World joined the 17 Kids and Counting (which became < i> 18 Children and Counting and then 19 Children and Counting as Duggars, extended family serial center, expanded), and Table 12 each on 2008 and 2009. Serial Toddler & amp; Tiaras also debuted in 2008, and proved popular enough to spawn off in 2012, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo , focusing on Alana's family life of recurring contestants "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson, which was canceled in 2014. Also premiered on TLC in 2009 was Cake Boss , which focused on the baker's chief at Carlo's Bakery and his staff, who are mostly made up of his family.

In July 2014, TLC introduced a new promotional slogan and campaign, "Everyone Needs a Little TLC", which continues to build the current network focus on personal stories and family life.

In March 2018, Discovery Communications acquired Scripps Networks Interactive, and changed its name to Discovery, Inc. TLC president Nancy Daniels left the network to become Mike Westin's fact-finding chief brand officer, to replace the ongoing Rich Ross. He was replaced by the head of Scripps Networks programmer Kathleen Finch as chief brand officer of the lifestyle network Discovery, overseeing TLC and six networks previously owned by SNI (such as HGTV and Food Network), among others.

In 2017, home design programming starts back into the network with the premiere of Nate & amp; Jeremiah By Design ; this series is updated for the second season. In April 2018, the premiere TLC of the Trading Spaces (which accompanied the 2nd season premiered from Nate & Jeremiah By Design ); the inaugural season and special reunions watched are seen by 2.8 million viewers, marking Saturday's primetime program the highest network since 2010.
