Histori

When the state of Texas deregulated the electric market, former Houston Lighting & amp; Power (HL & amp; P) is divided into several companies. In 2003, HL & amp; P is divided into Reliant Energy, Texas Genco, and CenterPoint Energy.

As of December 15, 2004, CenterPoint Energy and its predecessors operate in various markets under these names; they are used separately prior to Reliant Energy, and then simultaneously with the names Reliant Energy and CenterPoint Energy:

  • Minnegasco (Natural gas in all parts of Minnesota)
  • Houston Lighting and Power (or HL & amp; P) Houston-Galveston power supply
  • Entex (Natural gas throughout South and East Texas, South Louisiana and Mississippi)
  • Arkla (Natural gas throughout Northern Louisiana, Northeast Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas)

In late 2004, four private equity firms - the Texas Pacific Group, the Blackstone Group, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, and Hellman & amp; Friedman - combined forces to buy Texas Genco from Centerpoint. Then in 2006, Texas Genco was sold to NRG Energy of Princeton, N.J.

On April 23, 2018 CenterPoint Energy and Vectren Corporation announced they have signed a definitive merger agreement.

September 2008 power cuts

Hurricane Ike caused service disruption in the Greater Houston Area, wiping out 2.1 million of the ViewPoint Energy Electricity's 2.6 million clients. It is the largest power outage in the company's 130-year history, and the largest in the country's history.

Smart meter pilot program

In March 2009, the company's five-year smart-meter launch began, providing smart meter functionality to Retail Electric Providers (REPs). The company works with the Department of Energy for a pilot program in Texas that is centered on energy consumption. After working with a 500-residential power customer in the Houston area, it was found that by using smart gauges, consumers are reducing energy use for homes. The pilot program is funded in part by the $ 200 million received from federal stimulus measures.

CenterPoint Energy has worked with IBM. In 2013, IBM helped CenterPoint Energy develop a Customer Vision Platform. The Customer Vision Platform will provide CenterPoint 360-degree views of their 5 million meter subscribers, which combine their customers with gas, electricity, and home services. This will give customers a variety of choices around how they want to interact with CenterPoint while also providing a consistent experience across the board.

Criticism

On December 16, 2005, Centerpoint Energy Inc. said it would restate its finances for 2004 and the first three quarters of 2005 to correct an accounting error that exaggerates revenues and natural gas costs.

In December 2011, the Public Campaign of nonpartisan organizations criticized CenterPoint Energy to spend $ 2.65 million on lobbying and not paying any taxes during 2008-2010, instead of getting $ 284 million in tax breaks, despite making a profit of $ 1.9 billion , and has an executive pay between $ 12 and $ 13 million for the top 5 executives.
