Boston, Massachusetts, first published in 1789. It contains "lists of merchants, mechanics, merchants, etc., from the city of Boston, to enable foreigners to discover other people's residence. "Also included are lists for public officials, doctors, bank directors, and firefighters. This directory is published annually after 1825; had previously appeared irregularly.
The number of lists in each directory reflects fluctuations in Boston's population size. In 1789, the directory included about 1,474 lists; in 1875, there were 126,769.
