BBC America is a US cable digital and satellite television network shared by BBC Studios and AMC Networks.

Unlike BBC's domestic channels in the UK, BBC Americans do not receive funds from UK license fees (which are the main funding for BBC channels in the United Kingdom), as the BBC can not fund its channels available outside the UK. As a result, BBC America operates as a commercially supported channel and receives traditional advertising. It is also funded by cable and satellite TV subscription fees.

In February 2015, BBC America was available for approximately 78.4 million television households (67.3% of cable, satellite and telecommunications subscribers) in the United States.

Histori

BBC America was launched on March 29, 1998, presenting a mixture of comedy, drama and lifestyle programs from BBC Television and other UK television broadcasters including ITV and Channel 4. In the early days of the channel, the focus was on repetition of popular lifestyle events such as and Army . The head of the BBC's US television show later stated that it is important for the channel to build a niche because non-British viewers find lifestyles attractive. Most of the new programs appear as part of the BBC America's night schedule.

The network removed British soap operas EastEnders from its schedule in 2003 because of low ratings; But the removal of the program from BBC America provoked complaints from viewers, which attracted media attention.

After CEO Paul Lee was appointed president of the ABC Family in 2009, the network appointed Bill Hilary of Comedy Central to serve as chief executive officer. Hilary pointed Kathryn Mitchell to the new general manager's position. Under the Hilary administration, BBC America is restructured; moved its main office to New York City and its program budget increased substantially. The channel is led by Garth Ancier, who served as president of BBC Worldwide Americas from February 2007 to 2010, when he was replaced by former MTV Networks executive Herb Scannell. Meanwhile, Perry Simon served as general manager.

In 2014, AMC Networks acquired 49.9% equity stake in BBC America for $ 200 million, and replaced Discovery Communications as its management partner. As part of the deal, AMC Networks also takes on the responsibility of negotiating the sale of US broadcasts and advertisements for the BBC World News channel. AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan stated that the deal gave his company "a collection of strong networks that are one of the most critically acclaimed, with different drama and other powerful content that creates an in-depth relationship with viewers", while BBC Worldwide CEO Tim Davie consider it "An opportunity to cultivate creative quality and ambition from an already high base."

AMC Networks is also a partner in BritBox, an over-the-top subscription service focused on English television operated by BBC Worldwide and ITV plc.
