Vicks VapoRub's ointment is a topical ointment smeared, part of the Vicks brand of over-the-counter medicines owned by American pharmaceutical company Procter & amp; Gamble. VapoRub is indicated for use on the chest, back and throat for cough suppression or in muscles and joints for mild illness and pain. It has also been used to treat mosquito bites. VapoRub users often apply it immediately before going to bed.

First sold in 1905, VapoRub was originally produced by a company owned by the Richardson-Vicks, Inc. family, based in Greensboro, North Carolina. Richardson-Vicks is sold to Procter & amp; Gambling in 1985 and now known as Vicks. VapoRub is also manufactured and packaged in India and Mexico. VapoRub continues to be Vicks's flagship product internationally, and the Vicks brand name is often used synonymously with VapoRub products.

History

According to Joe Schwarcz, this product can be traced to Jules Bengue, a French pharmacist, who created Ben-Gay, a menthol-based treatment for arthritis, gout and neuralgia. Lunsford Richardson, a pharmacist in Selma, North Carolina, sells Ben-Gay and hears from his customers that it clears their sinuses. He mixed menthol into a petroleum jelly, initially calling him Richardson's Croup and Pneumonia Cure Salve, then changing his name to Vicks VapoRub. Named according to Richard's brother-in-law, Joshua Vick, a doctor who has arranged for Richardson to have access to the laboratory to make the product. Richardson began selling it in 1905.

Safe use

VapoRub can be inhaled with hot steam. Because the VapoRub ointment is an oil-based remedy, it should not be used under or inside the nose or inside the mouth, and should not be swallowed. The oil-based product can enter the lungs if used incorrectly.

In pre-clinical animal studies, the application of Vicks VapoRub directly to the civet trachea leads to increased mucus production compared to water-based lubricants. However, since the authors used a water-based compound instead of oil-based as a control, it was not possible to ascertain which Vicks VapoRub component caused an increase in mucus production. Since Vicks VapoRub is also directly applicable to ferret wears, it is also difficult to estimate the results of this study to comment on possible irritation arising from the use of Vicks VapoRub that is safe in humans.

A Penn State study shows Vicks VapoRub is more effective than rubbing petroleum placebo to help cough and congestion with regards to helping children and adults sleep. However, the study also showed that, unlike placebo rubbing oil, Vicks VapoRub was associated with a burning sensation in the skin (28%), nose (14%) and eyes (16%), with 5% of study participants reporting redness and rashes when using product.

Another study shows VapoRub is an effective cough medicine for guinea pigs. It has been suggested that VapoRub can reduce or cure onychomycosis (nail fungus).
