Universo is an American digital cable and satellite television network owned by NBCUniversal Hispanic Enterprises Group and a subsidiary of Content from NBCUniversal. The network serves as a companion cable channel to NBCUniversal, NBC's broadcast television network and, to some extent, its Spanish-language Telemundo network.
Aimed at Hispanics between the ages of 18 and 49, the majority of the programming - tailored to bilingual audiences - consists primarily of sports, script and reality series, and music programming. The network is headquartered in Miami Springs, Florida, while its main control operation is deployed at CNBC Global Headquarters at Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, which serves as the premier control facility for most of NBCUniversal cable networks.
This network was founded by Empresas 1BC as GEMS Television . In 2001, the network was acquired by Telemundo and re-branded as mun2 . The network was renamed NBC Universo in February 2015 to sync it with Telemundo's English-language network, NBC. In February 2015, the NBC Universal program is available for approximately 39,326 million pay-TV households (33.8% of cable, satellite and telecom subscribers with at least one television set) in the United States.
In January 2017, the "NBC" brand was removed from the on-air branding network; the network is now simply titled "Universo."

The network was launched on October 10, 1993 as GEMS Television , under the founding owner of Empresas 1BC. Cable television provider Cox Cable (now Cox Communications) acquired ownership in the network the following year. Network programming is aimed at Latin women.
As mun2
In 2001, GEMS was purchased by Telemundo Communications Group (then a joint venture led by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Liberty Media), and changed its programming format to target a younger audience; the name is changed to mun2 (pronounced mundos , meaning "world," word game on Telemundo and dos , Spanish word for number "2") , the chosen name with a view to reflecting the "two worlds" inhabited by Latin Americans.
The lineup initially included programs from Telemundo and then sister company Columbia TriStar Television (now Sony Pictures Television), including the repetition of the Spanish adaptation of Charlie's Angels ( Angeles ) and The Dating The game that has aired on Telemundo as part of a failed program change in 1998 in an effort to counter its competitors' program Univision. In addition, it runs programming blocks from the Spanish Home Shopping Network, Home Shopping Espaà ± a (HSE) network every day from 12:00 to 2:00 am. Eastern time.
The most famous networking series is the honest reality series I Love Jenni, featuring the life of banda singer/ranchero Jenni Rivera. After his death in a plane crash near Monterrey on December 9, 2012, the final season of the series earned the highest average season of any original mun2 program in its history, reaching a total of 5.5 million people throughout its broadcast during the 18-week Run season. It also ranked as the # 1 show among all Hispanic cable networks in every major demographic during the premiere of Sunday night. The on-demand traffic series is on the rise, with over eight million video streams on mun2.tv, and over one million videos on demand.
As a Universo
On December 24, 2014, NBCUniversal announced that it would relaunch mun2 as NBC Universo on February 1, 2015, to coincide with the Spanish-language broadcast of the XLIX Super Bowl network. The relaunch of the network under the name of NBC is designed to reflect the broadcaster's commitment to the Spanish-language television market.
Eight months prior to the announcement of the relaunch, at NBCUniversal Hispanic Enterprises and presentation content upfront at Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City on May 13, 2014, the company announced that NBC Universo would refine its program. The new lineup will increase its focus on sports coverage (which includes the reorganization of Telemundo's sports division as Telemundo Deportes, a branch of the English-language NBC Sports division), especially in preparation for broadcasting the 2016 Summer Olympics and his presumption of Spanish cable rights for FIFA tournaments (such as the Cup FIFA World 2018), which begins with the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2015. In January 2017, the "NBC" brand was dropped from the on-air branding network; the network is now simply titled "Universo."

Programming
The Universo program consists of sports, original drama series, reality series mostly centered on Hispanic celebrities, movies, and popular music videos and music-related magazine programs; he also broadcast a series from Telemundo and a network operated as part of NBCUniversal Cable's sister division, consisting of an original series of sister networks of Syfy and USA Network, which included Spanish text. To reflect its audience, the Universo does not exclusively broadcast programs in Spanish, broadcasting programs both presented in English, dubbed into Spanish and incorporating Spanish subtitles, and programs presented alternately in both languages.
Music programming on the network during its existence as a mun2 usually consists of a mixture of music videos in English and Spanish from various genres. In early April 2009, mun2 introduced two new music-oriented video events called Indie y Nuevo (programs that focused more on independent artists, which have since been canceled) and The Urban Tip (focusing on R & B, rap and reggaeton videos). At the end of December 2009, the network dropped its infomercial block broadcasted daily from 3:00 am to 6:00 am Eastern Time, and replaced it with an additional music video program in the form of Reventon Blends (Focus on music contemporary Latin festivals) or Morning Breath (featuring a selection of videos from various artists). In January 2010, the network also began broadcasting feature weekly feature blocks on Friday night.
Sports programming
Through the Telemundo Deportes branch of the NBC Sports Group, which replaces Telemundo's sports division Deportes Telemundo, for the establishment of its current unit in NBC Sports Group in May 2015, the Universo broadcast an associate football match of selected teams in the MX League (consisting of a home game from CF Pachuca), and holds Spain's play-by-play rights for the National Football League (NFL) event through NBC Sports's broadcasting agreement with the league.
As a mun2, this network serves as an English broadcaster of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers between the United States and Mexico's national football team. Ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Telemundo holds the right of American television to broadcast all Mexico qualifiers from Azteca Stadium, with NBC assigning English rights for the event. This network is available to almost all cable and satellite customers across the US as a "free preview" on August 12, 2009, when the game is held, with broadcasts presented by NBC Sports.
As a result of former Deportes Telemundo reached an agreement with FIFA to obtain Spanish language rights to the tournament on October 22, 2011, mun2 obtained the right of Spanish cable television to select games to FIFA Men's and Women's World Cup. The deal, which begins with the 2015 Women's World Cup and runs through 2026, includes rights to FIFA-sanction-related tournaments (including U-20 and Under-17 Men's World Cups and Men's Men's Football World Cup); an extended deal on February 12, 2015, to enter the right to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In January 2010, NBCUniversal announced that it will continue to broadcast a Mexican football game (under the F̮'̼tbol Mexicano brand); most of the games shown up to now usually consist of English broadcasts from Telemundo's Telemundo F̮'̼tbol Estelar broadcast. In February 2010, mun2 debuted at the mun2 Sports Arena , a half-hour sports news program aired on Sunday night. Under the NBC Sports contract to broadcast the Premier League, the network began broadcasting Spanish-language broadcasts of selected English match broadcasts on NBCSN with the 2013-14 season.
On July 23, 2013, NBC Sports announced that Telemundo and mun2 will broadcast NASCAR events in Spanish in early 2015, as part of NBC's new rights deal to close the second half of the Series Cup and the Xfinity Series season. As the beginning of the new contract, mun2 aired the opening of Toyota Series - the Mexican NASCAR series, at Phoenix International Raceway during The Profit on CNBC 500 weekend on February 28, 2014.
Through a NBC right-back agreement with the NFL, they brought their first Spanish simulcast from the NFL game, airing the Thanksgiving game between Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers on November 27, 2014; on February 1, 2015, the renamed NBC Universo serves as the Spanish-speaking broadcaster of the Super Bowl XLIX (which NBC has the right to broadcast that year); NBC has proposed using Telemundo to act as a Spanish language simulator for many years after a network purchase in 2001, but this did not happen until the Premier League deal. It will serve the same role in 2018 with the Super Bowl LII.
