General Car Insurance Services, Inc. (or just General ) is a licensed insurance agent who is a subsidiary of PGC Holdings Corp. (PGC), which focuses on car insurance. In 2012, the company was acquired by American Family Insurance ; The General Brands still remain as separate brands. General specializes in insuring drivers who are considered "high risk," whose auto insurance premiums are usually more expensive.

History
General began selling insurance in 1963, under the name of the Permanent General Agency. Later, the name was changed to Permanent General Assurance Corporation (PGAC), and in 2012, it was announced that Permanent General and all affiliated companies would be united under one brand name "The General."
In 2016, a retired professional basketball player, Shaquille O'Neal, appears in an advertisement for the company.
