Shaw Direct is a direct broadcast satellite television distributor in Canada. Known for their live broadcasting with satellite distribution, the majority are owned by cable TV operators Shaw Communications Inc. In 2010, Shaw Direct has more than 900,000 subscribers. It broadcasts on K u bands of three communication satellites, Anik F1R and Anik G1 at 107.3 â ⬠<â ⬠<à ° W, and Anik F2 at 111.1 à ° W; The satellite is owned by Telesat Canada and is used primarily to distribute programming to Canadian cable TV companies. The company was previously known as Star Choice until April 15, 2009.
The complete list of channels carried by these three satellites is available from satellite-related sites such as Lyngsat. Anik F1 carries most of the major English programming; Anik F2 programming includes French-language broadcasts and HDTV. The planned third satellite, Anik G1, was launched on April 15, 2013, and then reached orbit on May 29, 2013. This new satellite provides Shaw Direct customers with access to over 210 HD channels.
Shaw Direct started in Lincoln, New Brunswick, but is now based in Calgary, Alberta. Its broadcasting center is in Mississauga, Ontario, and has call centers in Victoria, Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Montreal.
The system requires an elliptical antenna with a minimum size of 45x60cm with a pair of special LNBs built as a unit to accommodate a narrow distance between satellites 3.8 à °; the receiver uses Motorola's Digicipher II system which has so far been virtually trouble-free with pirate decryption that has infected other providers such as rival Bell TV. The 18 "standard DBS antennas used by other providers are not compatible with this system because signals differ in frequency and polarization.Shaw Direct is routed through FSS satellites, Anik F1R, G1 and F2.
