The Sawtelle Veterans Home is a nursing home for disabled American veterans in what is now part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area (see Sawtelle, Los Angeles) in California in the United States. The Home, officially the Pacific Branch of the National House for the Disabled Volunteer Army , was founded in 1887 at 300 acres (1.2 km ² ) the land of Rancho San Vicente y Santa Monica was donated by Senators John P. Jones and Arcadia B. de Baker. The following year, the site grew with an additional 200 hectares (0.81 km ² ); in 1890, 20 acres (0.081 km ² ) more were added for use as veterans' funerals. With more than 1,000 veterans at home, the new hospital was established in 1900. The hospital was replaced in 1927 by Wadsworth Hospital, now known as West Los Angeles VA Medical Center .

National Sanctuary for the Disabled Persons Disabled

In 1865, Congress passed a law to include the National Asylum for the Disabled Persons and Sailors of the Civil War Sailors. Volunteers are not eligible to be admitted to regular army and naval facilities. This law, one of the last Stories signed by President Lincoln, marks the entry of the United States into the provision of direct care for the interim military versus career. Asylum was renamed the National House for the Disabled Persons Volunteers (NHDVS) in 1873. It was also known colloquially as Old Soldiers Home. Between 1867 and 1929, Home expanded into ten branches and one sanatorium.

The Board of Managers is empowered to set up Houses in locations as they deem appropriate and to establish the programs they deem necessary. The house is a unique creation of the Congress. While the Manager includes, ex-officio, President of the United States, Secretary of War and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, it is not part of the executive branch of the government. Her budget request in subsequent years was filed simultaneously with the War Department. But during its existence, until 1930, the Board of Managers consistently defended the independence of the Executive Branch.

In 1900 the acceptance was extended to all officers, soldiers and sailors honored serving in the regular army or US volunteers in a war in which the state was involved and who was disabled, who lacked adequate means of support and was unable to earn a living. As the official declaration of war was not a rule in the Indian War, the Congress specifically extended the eligibility for Homes for those "serving against the hostile Indians" in 1908. The veterans serving in the Philippines, China and Alaska were covered in 1909.

Pacific Branch

Due to increased demand as a result of widening acceptance standards, in 1887 Congress approved the establishment of Pacific Branch of the Home. The Pacific Branch was established under the action of Congress approved March 2, 1887, entitled "An act to provide the location and establishment of a Branch House for the Voluntary Army of Persons with Disabilities to the west of the Rocky Mountains."

Donation of land

The proposed company encourages intense competition, as local promoters recognize the value of leading and prestigious institutions. Sites selected for the Pacific Branch on the mainland near Santa Monica are affected by land donations (300 hectares (1.2 km ² )) and cash ($ 100,000) and water (120,000 gallons per day) from Senators John P. Jones and Robert S. Baker, and his wife, Arcadia Bandini de Stearns Baker. Jones and Baker are involved in the development of Santa Monica and believe that Pacific Branch will contribute to the growth of communities and areas. The owner of Wolfskill's east ranch from Sepulveda Boulevard, donated 330 hectares of channel (1.3 km ² ).

Development

The Pacific Branch was opened in 1888 at 713 hectares (2.89 km ² ) land. The leading architect of Stanford White is credited with designing the original shingle-style barracks. J. Lee Burton designed a tram depot and a shingle-style chapel in 1900. Barry's hospital was built in parts from 1891 to 1909. The planting of pine, palm, and eucalyptus trees altered the site from a treeless state.

Administration

Although the Board of Managers establishes regulations for the operation of the NHDVS system and oversees the operation, many decisions are made at the local level by local managers (who are members of the Board of Managers)

or chief administrative officers.

Branches twice became the object of local controversy, fueled by newspaper coverage. In 1889, the Board of Managers conducted a Pacific Branch investigation after numerous allegations, including ill-treatment of members, bad food, and corrupt management, flattened. The council found little reason to worry, because their only action was to remind Governor Branch of his responsibilities.

In 1912, the US Senate, requested by newspaper reports, investigated the operations of the Pacific Branch but found little ground for the allegations.

Sawtelle

Pacific Branch serves as an attraction for tourists and local real estate speculators. In 1904, the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad branch stopped at the Balloon Route - a popular tour of local attractions by an entrepreneur who drove tourists through a rented tram. In 1905, much of the larger housing and tracts in the new Westgate Subdivision, which joined the "Beautiful Warrior House", and owned and promoted by Jones and Baker's Santa Monica Land and Water Company, will be sold. The newly developed Sawtelle community around the Pacific Branch when the veteran family, as well as its own veteran who was taking help, settled there.

Wadsworth Hospital

After World War I, a new governing body, the Veterans' Bureau, was formed to provide care and rehabilitation for this much younger group of veterans. The development of medical facilities for veterans during the 1920s triggered a construction boom during that decade, including the residency of the Colonial Revival staff. James W. Wadsworth Hospital opened in 1927, replacing Barry Hospital.

Veteran Administration

The National House and Veterans' Bureau, were incorporated into the US Veterans Administration by President Hoover in 1930. Planning began for a major development campaign, including a Mission/Spanish Colonial-style hospital building and a group of romantic-inspired research buildings. The Wadsworth Hospital is currently built in the late 1930s. A new theater replaces the former Ward Theater in 1940. Most of the 1890s era buildings were destroyed in the 1960s. The Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital building (VA Wadsworth Medical Center) opened in 1977.

VA West Los Angeles Medical Center

VA West Los Angeles Medical Center of VA Greater Los Angeles Health Care System is a tertiary health care facility and hospital south of Wilshire Boulevard and west of San Diego Freeway at Sawtelle Campus. It provides a range of health care services for veterans. The largest of the VA healthcare campuses, it is part of the VA Desert Pacific Network.
