It was originally launched in 1998 as VH1 Smooth, a contemporary and smooth adult jazz channel. It was relaunched as VH1 Classic Rock in 1999 (later renamed VH1 Classic), with an emphasis on classic rock. On August 1, 2016, in honor of MTV's 35th anniversary, the channel was renamed MTV Classic, and now exclusively features music videos of all genres from the 1980s to the 2000s.

Histori

Sebagai VH1 Smooth (1998-1999)

VH1 Smooth was released on August 1, 1998 as part of the "Suite" digital package, delaying the initial launch date on July 31, 1998. The channel focuses on smooth jazz, new age, and contemporary musical adult. The first music video played on the channel was the cover of "Makin 'Whoopee" by Branford Marsalis.

As VH1 Classic (1999-2016)

Released on January 15, 1999 as VH1 Classic Rock , the channel primarily featured a mixture of rock/adult music formatted with mixed music videos and concert recordings from the 1970s to the mid-1990s, although initially including more genres and time periods. The channel name was quickly converted to VH1 Classic in 2000.

The network only plays music videos when launched, but is quickly expanded to a variety of themed music programs. This includes the compilation block of themed music videos (with categories like Heavy Metal music, or 1980's popular music), long concerts, music documentaries like Classic Album and Behind Music > series, music-oriented films (such as Purple Rain and The Blues Brothers ), and the original talk show That Metal Show >. They also re-broadcast the first program featured on the main VH1 channel, including Pop-Up Video and I Love the '80s .

From January 28 to February 15, 2015, VH1 Classic aired 433 hours, a nineteen-day marathon Saturday Night Live in celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the event. As a result, the network broke the previous record for the longest continuous marathon in television history set by the two-day FXX marathon on The Simpsons .

As an MTV Classic (2016-present)

In July 2016, Viacom announced that on August 1, the 35th anniversary of the original MTV launch, the network will be renamed MTV Classic . Channel programming continues to focus on classical music videos and programming (including the infamous episodes of MTV Unplugged and Storytellers), but is more in the 1980s, 1990s and early to mid- 2000s. The rebranded networking schedule also includes encores from the original MTV series past as 2011 Beavis and Butt-head revival and Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County . The network relaunch took place at 06:00 ET with a re-broadcast of MTV's first hour in the air, also broadcast on MTV and online via Facebook live stream, labeled as "MTV Hour One" (channel, as VH1 Classic, had previously shown it for marks the 30th anniversary of the network in 2011). Some VH1 Classic programs are maintained in the existing schedule, even at late hours.

Three days before 1 January 2017, MTV Classic aired a 24-hour block of "Decade-a-thons" comprising music videos from the 1980s by the 2000s. After that, MTV Classic launches a new automatic all-video schedule, with all older classified MTV and VH1 Classic content deleted.

By the end of 2016, this channel is the most watched English-language channel on all American cables, averaging only 30-35,000 viewers on a median night in primetime (a drop of nearly a third of the already low number VH1 Classic has netted in the year 2015), which may be a factor in the network to quickly abandon their new format after five months. By the end of May 2017, the number has fallen further to an average of 14,000 viewers per night, just ahead of the near-death Esquire Network and BeIN Sports, which at the time was a non-prime sports season. Even that low number was halved at the end of July 2017, because the month's rankings show it averaged 7,000 viewers per night, just above the beIN network. If not for the addition of Entertainment Studios Networks Comedy.tv and Justice Central for Nielsen monitoring by the end of 2017, along with a downgrade of beIN Sports, it will be the lowest-ranking English speaking network in 2017 with 14,000 average viewers/night.
