Cuba was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His father, Norton Cuban, is a car welder, while Cuba describes his mother, Shirley, as someone with "different jobs or different career goals each week." He grew up on the outskirts of Mount Lebanon, in a Jewish working class family. The paternal grandfather changed the family name from "Chabenisky" to "Cuba" after his family emigrated from Russia via Ellis Island. Her maternal grandmother, who is also a Jew, is from Romania. Cuba's first step into the business world occurred at the age of 12, when he sold a garbage bag to pay for a pair of expensive basketball shoes. At age 16, Cuba took advantage of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette strike by running a newspaper from Cleveland to Pittsburgh.
Instead of attending high school for his final year, he enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Pittsburgh, where he joined the fraternity of Pi Lambda Phi International. While studying at the University of Pittsburgh, he held various jobs, including bartenders, disco dance instructors, and party promoters. He is a "beloved" fan of the Pittsburgh NFL team, Pittsburgh Steelers. After a year at the University of Pittsburgh, he moved to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and graduated from Kelley School of Business in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management. He chose Kelley Indiana Business School even without visiting campus because "it has the cheapest tuition fees of all business schools on the top 10 list". During college she has a variety of business ventures, including bars, disco lessons, and chain letters.

Business career
In 1982, Cuba moved to Dallas, Texas, where he first found work as a bartender, and then as a salesperson for your Business Software, one of the earliest PC software retailers in Dallas. He was fired less than a year later, after meeting with clients to get a new business rather than open a store.
Cuba started its own company, MicroSolutions, with support from previous customers of your Business Software. MicroSolutions was originally a systems integrator and software retailer. The company is an early supporter of technologies such as Carbon Copy, Lotus Notes, and CompuServe. One of the company's biggest clients is Perot Systems.
In 1990, Cuba sold MicroSolutions to CompuServe - then a subsidiary of H & amp; R Block - for $ 6 million. He earns about $ 2 million after taxes on the deal.
Audionet and Broadcast.com
In 1995, Chris Jaeb and fellow Indiana University alumnus Todd Wagner started Audionet (which Cuba began funding in 1998), incorporating their shared interests at Indiana Hoosier college basketball and webcasting. With one ISDN server and line, Audionet became Broadcast.com in 1998. In 1999, Broadcast.com has grown to 330 employees and $ 13.5 million in revenue for the second quarter. In 1999, Broadcast.com helped launch Live Broadcast Fashion Victoria's first live-stream. That year, during the dot com boom, Broadcast.com was acquired by Yahoo! for $ 5.7 billion on Yahoo! stock.
After the sale of Broadcast.com, Cuba diversified its wealth to avoid exposure to market destruction. The Guinness Book of Records credits Cuban with the "largest single e-commerce transaction", after he paid $ 40 million for the Gulfstream V jet in October 1999.
Cuba continues to work with Wagner in another venture, 2929 Entertainment, which provides vertically integrated production and distribution of film and video.
On September 24, 2003, the company purchased Landmark Theaters, a network of 58 cinema theaters. The company is also responsible for the latest version of the Star Search TV show, which airs on CBS. 2929 Entertainment released Bubble , a film directed by Steven Soderbergh, in theaters on January 27, 2006 and DVD four days later as a simultaneous release.

In February 2004, Cuba announced that he would work with ABC television to produce a reality television series, The Benefactor. The premise of the six-episode series involved 16 contestants who tried to win $ 1 million by participating in various contests, with their performances assessed by Cuba. It aired on September 13, 2004, but due to poor ratings, the series was canceled before the full season aired.
In 2011, Cuba is No. 211 in Forbes ' "The Richest Man in the World" list, with a net worth of $ 2.6 billion.
Cuba financially supported Grokster in the case of the Supreme Court MGM v. Grokster . He is also a partner in Synergy Sports Technology, a web-based talent and web-based introduction tool, used by many NBA teams.
Invest in startups
Cuba also helps businesses in social software and industrial distribution networks. He is the owner of IceRocket, a search engine that explores the blogosphere for content. Cuban is also a partner at RedSwoosh - a company that uses peer-to-peer technology to deliver multimedia, including video and software, to a user's PC - which is then acquired by Akamai. He is also an investor at Weblogs, Inc. which was acquired by AOL.
In 2005, Cuban invested in Brondell Inc., a company in San Francisco that built high-tech toilets called Swash that functioned like a bidet but installed in a standard toilet. "People tend to approach technology in the same way, whether it's in front of them, or behind them," joked Cuban. He also invested in Goowy Media Inc., a San Diego Internet startup software. In April 2006, Sirius Satellite Radio announced that Cuban would host its own weekly radio talk show, Mark Cuban's Radio Maverick. However, the show has not materialized.
In July 2006, Cuba financed Sharesleuth.com, a website created by former St. Louis Post-Dispatch investigative reporter Christopher Carey to uncover fraud and misinformation in a public company. Experimenting with new business models to make online journalism financially feasible, Cuba revealed that it would take a position in the company's shares mentioned at Sharesleuth.com before publication. Business and legal analysts question the feasibility of shorted stock before making public statements that are likely to result in a loss in the value of the stock. Cuba insists that this practice is legal in view of full disclosure.
In April 2007, Cuba partnered with Mascot Books to publish their first children's book, Let's Go, Mavs! . In November 2011, he wrote 30,000 e-books, the How to Win in the Sport of Business: If I Can Do It, You Can Do It , which he describes as a "way of getting motivated".
In October 2008, Cuba started Bailoutsleuth.com as a grassroots online portal for oversight of the US government's $ 700 billion "bailout" of financial institutions.
In September 2010, Cuba provided a number of undisclosed venture capital to its storefront analysis company, Motionloft. According to the company's CEO, Jon Mills, he e-mailed Cuba coolly to a business proposition and claimed Cuban quickly replied that he wanted to hear more. Mills credits the phrase for launching the company. In November 2013, some investors questioned Cuban about Mills representatives about the pending acquisition of Motionloft. Cuba denies any acquisitions. Mills was terminated as CEO of Motionloft by shareholders on December 1, 2013, and in February 2014 was arrested by the FBI and accused of wire fraud, allegedly Mr. Mills misrepresented investors that Motionloft will be acquired by Cisco. Cuba has gone on record to state that the technology, which is at least partly intended to serve the commercial real estate industry, is a "game of change" for tenants.
Shark Tank
Cuba has been a "shark" investor on the ABC Shark Tank reality program since the second season of 2011.
By July 2017, he had invested in 85 transactions in 111 episodes of Shark Tank, totaling $ 19.9 million invested. The actual amount varies as investment occurs after a handshake agreement on live television, after due diligence is done to ensure the accuracy of the information presented in the pitch room. For example, Hy-Conn, the manufacturer of fire-removable hoses, after agreeing a $ 1.25 million deal for 100% of companies with Cuba, did not go through the deal.
Three Cuban deals, all with at least $ 1 million invested, are Ten Thirty One Productions, Rugged Maniac Contstacle Race, and BeatBox Beverages.
Since Cuba joined the show in 2011, the ratings for Shark Tank have increased, and also during his tenure, the show has won three Emmy Primetime Awards for the Outstanding Structured Reality Program (2014-2016). By 2018, Cuba is the second richest of all Sharks to appear on the show, with 3.7 billion, after Richard Branson, with 5.1 billion.
Image of Magnolia
Cuban has film distributor Magnolia Pictures. Through Magnolia, he was financed Redacted , a fictional dramatization based on Mahmudiyah's murder in 2006, written and directed by Brian De Palma. In September 2007, Cuba, in its capacity as owner of Magnolia Pictures, removed the annoying photos from the closing moments Redacted , citing copyright/licensing issues.
Also in 2007, Cuba was reportedly interested in distributing through the Loose Change film Magnolia, which presupposes the 9/11 conspiracy theory, with the narrative Charlie Sheen. Cuba told the New York Post, "We are discussing about distributing the existing video with Charlie's involvement as a narrator, not in making new features. We are also looking for production in opposite viewpoints. We are like controversial subjects, but we are agnostic from which side the controversy comes from. "
In April 2011, Cuban placed Magnolia Pictures and Landmark Theaters for sale, but said, "If we do not get the price and premium we want, we're happy to continue making money off property."
Insider trading demands SEC
On November 17, 2008, it was reported that the US Securities and Commerce Commission (SEC) filed a civil lawsuit against Cuba over alleged insider trafficking over Mamma.com shares, now known as Copernic. Stock dilution took place shortly after trading in June 2004, providing clues about insider knowledge during trading, and Cuba was allegedly saved from a loss of $ 750,000. The SEC claims that Cuba ordered the sale of its holdings on Mamma.com after he was secretly approached by the company to participate in transactions that are likely to weaken current shareholder shares. Cuba denies the allegations, saying he does not agree to keep the information confidential. On his blog, Cuba argues that the facts are wrong and that the investigation is "a product of abusive abuse of prosecution policy". DealBook , part of The New York Times , reported through an anonymous source that Cuban believes investigation is motivated by a SEC employee who is offended by his interest in distributing the possibility of Loose Change .
In July 2009, the US District Court dismissed allegations against Cuba, and the SEC appealed. In September 2010, the appellate court said that the district court had been mistaken and that further proceedings would be needed to address the benefits of the lawsuit.
The federal jury in Texas agreed with Cuba on October 16, 2013. The nine-member jury issued a verdict after negotiating 3 hours and 35 minutes.
In March 2014, Cuba airs on CNBC criticizing high-frequency trading (HFT). Those who oppose HFT, like Cuba, believe that this technology is equivalent to insider trading automatically.

Dallas Mavericks
On January 4, 2000, Cuba purchased a majority stake in the NBA Dallas Mavericks for $ 285 million from H. Ross Perot, Jr.
In the 20 years before Cuba bought the team, the Mavericks only won 40% of their game, and a 21-32 playoff record. In the next 10 years, the team won 69 percent of their regular season games and reached the playoffs in each season except one. Mavericks' playoff record with Cuba was 49 wins and 57 losses, including their first trip to the NBA Finals in 2006, where they lost to the Miami Heat.
On 12 June 2011, the Mavericks beat the Heat to win the NBA Finals. Historically, NBA team owners have publicly played a more passive role and watched basketball games from skyboxes; Cuba sits next to fans while wearing a team jersey. Cuba traveled on a private plane - a Gulfstream V - to attend street games.
In May 2010, H. Ross Perot, Jr., who retained ownership of 5%, filed a lawsuit against Cuba, declared that the franchise was bankrupt or in danger of bankruptcy. In June 2010, Cuba responded in a court filing that retained Perot by mistakenly making money to offset a $ 100 million loss on the Victory Park real estate development. The lawsuit was dismissed in 2011, in part because Cuba confirmed the good management of the team due to its recent victory in the 2011 NBA Finals. In 2014, the 5th Circuit Court confirmed that the decision on appeal. After his initial defeat, Perot attempted to close the Mavericks fan from the use of the parking lot he controlled near American Airlines Center.
In January 2018, Cuba announced the Mavericks would accept Bitcoin as a ticket payment the following season.
Policy controversy
Cuban ownership has been a source of broad media attention and controversy involving league policy.
Cuba has been fined by the NBA, mostly for critical statements about the league and the referee, at least $ 1.665 million for 13 incidents. In an interview on June 30, 2006, Mavericks player Dirk Nowitzki said of Cuba:
He must learn to control himself as well as the players. We can not lose our patience all the time in court or out of court, and I think he should learn it too. He had to fix in that area and not shout at officials throughout the game. I do not think it helps us... He sits there on our bench. I think that's a bit much. But we all told him this before. Not a new thing. The game starts, and he's already yelling at them. So he needs to know how to control himself a bit.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Cuba said that he matched NBA fines with a charitable donation of the same amount. In a nationally-publicized incident in 2002, he criticized league managers Ed T. Rush, saying that he "would not be able to manage Dairy Queen." Dairy Queen's management was offended by Cuban comments and invited her to run the Dairy Queen restaurant for a day. Cuba accepted the company's invitation and worked for a day at Dairy Queen in Coppell, Texas, where fans lined up the streets to get Blizzard from the Mavericks owners.
During the 2005-06 NBA season, Cuba started a derisive campaign when former Mavericks player Michael Finley returned to play against the Mavericks as a member of the San Antonio Spurs. In the playoff series between the Mavericks and Spurs, Cuba condemned Spurs forward Bruce Bowen and was fined $ 25,000 by the NBA for rushing to court and criticizing NBA officials. After the 2006 NBA Finals, Cuba was fined $ 250,000 by the NBA for repeated offenses after the loss of the Mavericks to the Miami Heat in Game Five of the 2006 NBA Finals.
In February 2007, Cuba publicly criticized NBA Finals MVP Dwyane Wade and stated that he would be fined if he made a comment about what he thought was really happening in the 2006 NBA Finals.
On January 16, 2009, the league fined Cuba $ 25,000 to shout out Denver Nuggets player JR Smith at the end of the first half on a Mavericks-at-Nuggets game that was played on 13 January. Cuba was apparently angry that Smith had thrown an elbow that nearly lost the Mavericks to Antoine Wright. Cuba offered to match the fine with a donation to Smith's chosen charity. Cuba declared that if he did not hear from Smith, he would donate his money to Gol of the NHL Players Association and the Dream Fund in the names of Todd Bertuzzi and Steve Moore. In May 2009, Cuba made reference to the Denver Nuggets being a "villain" after losing to the Nuggets in game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinals. The statement was directed at the Nuggets and their fans. When she passed Kenyon Martin's mother, who sat near Cuba as she left the arena, she pointed at him and said, "that includes your son." This controversial comment revisits media attention to Cuba again. Cuba issued an apology the next day referring to the ill-treatment of supporters in the arena surrounding the league. The League issued a statement stating that they would not justify it.
On May 22, 2010, Cuba was fined $ 100,000 for comments he made during a television interview about trying to sign LeBron James.
Despite his history, he was particularly silent during the 2011 Mavericks championship playoff game.
Despite the history of Cuba with David Stern, he believes the NBA Commissioner will leave a lasting legacy "focus on growth and recognize that the NBA is in the entertainment business and that it is a global product, not just a local product.Whatever platform takes us, he is ready to go. He's not protective at all, he's wide open, I think that's great. "
On January 18, 2014, Cuba was once again fined $ 100,000 for encountering referees and using inappropriate language towards them. Like previous fines, Cuba confirmed that he would match the fine with donations to charity, however, on condition that he reaches two million followers on his Twitter account. Cuba also jokingly commented that he could not let Stern go without the proper separation.
On October 28, 2015, Cuba said the Los Angeles Clippers are still not "honorable franchises" in terms of a failed deal between DeAndre Jordan and the Mavericks.
On 21 February 2018, Cuba was fined $ 600,000 by the NBA for stating that the Dallas Mavericks must "fill the rest of the season." Commissioner Adam Silver stated that the fine was "for public statements to the detriment of the NBA."
Major League Baseball
Cuba has repeatedly expressed interest in having a Major League Baseball franchise and failed to try to buy at least three franchises. In 2008, he made an initial offer of $ 1.3 billion to buy the Chicago Cubs and was invited to participate in a second bidding round along with several other potential ownership groups. Cuba was not elected to participate in the final bidding process in January 2009. In August 2010, Cuba actively bid to buy Rangers Texas with Jeffrey L. Beck. Cuba stopped the offer after 1 AM, after bidding nearly $ 600 million. He has beaten a group of competing ownerships led by former pitcher and Rangers executive Nolan Ryan, but lost the deal before Rangers played the San Francisco Giants in the 2010 World Series.
In January 2012, Cuba placed an initial offer for the Los Angeles Dodgers, but was eliminated before the second round of the offer. Cuba felt that the Dodgers' TV deal value pushed the franchise price too high. He previously said that he would not be interested in buying a $ 1 billion franchise, told Los Angeles Times in November 2011 "I do not think the Dodgers franchise is worth twice the value of Rangers." However, because the bidding process approached much speculation that sales would surpass $ 1.5 billion, with Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reporting via Twitter that at least one bid in the $ 1-1.5 billion range was placed in the early round of the bid process. Finally, Dodgers sold for $ 2.15 billion to Guggenheim Baseball Management.
Cuba also earlier expressed interest in becoming a minority owner of the New York Mets after owner Fred Wilpon announced in 2011 that he plans to sell up to 25% stake in the team.
Cuba wanted to buy his hometown Pittsburgh Pirates, but was rejected by owner Kevin McClatchy in 2005.
Other sports businesses
In 2005, Cuba expressed interest in purchasing the Pittsburgh Penguins NHL. In 2006, Cuba joined Dan Marino's investment group, Kevin Millevoi, Andy Murstein, and Walnut Capital principals, Gregg Perelman and Todd Reidbord to try to acquire Penguin. The franchise finally rejected the group's offer when team owner Mario Lemieux and Ronald Burkle took the team out of the market.
At the WWE's Survivor Series in 2003, Cuban was involved in a row staged with Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff and Randy Orton's wrestler. On 7 December 2009, Cuba acted as the guest host of Raw, taking revenge on Orton when he was the guest referee in Orton's game against Kofi Kingston, giving Kingston a quick win. He then announces that Orton will face Kingston in TLC: Tables, Stairs & amp; Chairs. At the end of the event, Cuba was slammed through a table by the number one contender for the WWE Championship, Sheamus.
On September 12, 2007, Cuba said he was in talks with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon to create a mixed martial arts company that would compete with UFC. He is now a bond holder of Zuffa, UFC's parent company.
Cuba followed up its intention by organizing a "HDNet Fight", a mixed martial arts promotion that aired exclusively on HDNet and aired on October 13, 2007 with a card directed by a fight between Erik Paulson and Jeff Ford as well as fights featuring veterans Drew Fickett and Justin Eilers.
Since 2009, Cuba has been a panelist at the annual Sloan Sports Analytics MIT Conference.
In April 2010, Cuba borrowed a newly formed $ 5 million United Football League (UFL). He has no franchise, and he is not involved in the daily operations of the league or any of his team. In January 2011, he filed a federal suit against the UFL due to their failure to repay the loan on a deadline of October 6, 2010.
In February 2016, Cuba purchased a major shareholding stake in the Futsal Professional League.
Political activity
Cuba is an admirer of writer and philosopher Ayn Rand. On the Rand The Fountainhead novel, he said, "It motivates me very much, it encourages me to think as an individual, to take risks to achieve my goals, and to take responsibility for my successes and failures. His political views are leaning towards libertarianism. He holds a position on the political advisory board of Unity08 unity organization. While leaning towards libertarianism, Cuba posted an entry on his blog claiming to pay more taxes to be the most patriotic thing a person can do.
In 2012, Cuba donated $ 7,000 for a political campaign, with $ 6,000 going to Republican Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah and $ 1,000 to California Democratic Congressman Zoe Lofgren.
On February 8, 2008, Cuba voiced its support for the draft Bloomberg movement that seeks to convince New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to run for the 2008 US presidential election on his blog. Cuba ended an article bemoaning the current state of US politics: "Are you listening, Bloomberg Mayor? Because less than the cost of opening a tent monument film, you can change the status quo." He finally chose Barack Obama in the 2008 election.
In November 2012, in response to Donald Trump who offered President Obama $ 5 million to President Obama's preferred charity if he released a college passport and transcript application to the public, Cuba offered Trump $ 1 million for Trump charities to choose if Trump shaved his head.
On December 19, 2012, Cuba donated $ 250,000 to the Electronic Frontier Foundation to support its work in patent reform. Part of his donation is funding a new title for EFF prosecutors, Julie Samuels: Mark, Chairman of Cuba for Eliminating Right to Obey.
At the Code/Media conference in February 2015, Cuba said net neutrality that "making [FCC] watching the Internet scares me."
Cuba officially endorsed Hillary Clinton for President on July 30, 2016 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During the campaign's dismissal, Cuba said of Republican Donald Trump's Republican candidate, "You know what we call such a person in Pittsburgh? Jagoff [...] Is there a bigger jagoff in the world than Donald Trump?"
On November 22, 2016, Cuba met with Trump's top advisor, the elected President, Steve Bannon, according to reports.
âââ ⬠<â â¬
Cuba started the Fall Patriot Fund to help families of US military personnel killed or wounded during the Iraq War, personally matching the first $ 1 million in contributions to the funding of the Mark Cuban Foundation, run by his brother Brian Cuban.
Speculation of presidential election
In September 2015, Cuba stated in an interview that running for president was "a fun idea to throw", and that, if he ran for president in 2016, he "can beat Trump and Clinton". This was interpreted by many media as an indication that Cuba was considering running, but he immediately clarified that he had no intention of doing so.
In October 2015, Cuba posted on Twitter, "Maybe I will run for the House Speaker." At that time, there was no obvious front-runner to replace John Boehner out; The House Speaker does not have to be a member of Congress.
Cuban told Meet the Press in May 2016 that he would be open to being a Clinton candidate in the election, although he would try to change some of his positions to do so. In the same interview, the Cuban "very self-contained Cuban" also said that he would consider running for the Trump's presidential candidate after meeting Trump, whom he calls a friend, about understanding the problem, positioning Trump on them, and finding solutions. Cuba also describes Trump as "the friend you just shook his head, he was a drunk and falling all the time, or just saying bullshit all the time, but he is your friend." On July 21, 2016, Cuba appeared in the live segment on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, titled "Gloves Off: Mark Cuban Edition" in which he mocked Trump, including the bankruptcy references of several Trump companies and the Trump University program which failed, and questioned Trump's true net worth of wealth.
In September 2016, an interview with NPR, Scott Simon, Cuba effectively positioned him to support Clinton. He argues that the best strategy to defeat Trump is to attack his insecurities, especially his intelligence. He also added that Trump is the most qualified to become president and is not informed of policy.
Then in September 2016, during an interview post-presidential debate, Cuba criticized the characterization Trump that pay minimum taxes required 'smart' and criticized Trump for not paying back to the system that allowed him to accumulate such wealth.
In October 2017, Cuba said that he "definitely" run for president if he is single.
Later in the same month, Cuba claimed that if he ran for president by 2020, he would become a Republican, and described himself as "socially centric... but very conservative on a fiscal basis." But it also speculates that he can challenge president Donald Trump in 2020 as a Democrat.
Personal life
Cuba has two brothers, Brian and Jeff Cuban.
In September 2002, Cuba married Tiffany Stewart in a private ceremony in Barbados. They have two daughters born in 2003, a daughter born in 2006, and a son born in 2010. They live in a 24,000 square foot house (2,200 m 2 ) at Preston Hollow area of ââDallas, Texas.
Philanthropy
In 2003, Cuba established the Patriot Jatuh Fund to help families of US military personnel killed or wounded during the Iraq War.
In June 2015, Cuba donated $ 5 million to Indiana University in Bloomington for "Mark Cuban Center for Sports Media and Technology," to be built in the Assembly Hall, the school's basketball court.
Sexual assault complaints
In a March 6, 2018 article, Willamette Week reported an alleged incident in April 2011 between Cuba and a female protector from a Portland, Oregon bar called the Barrel Room. The woman told Portland police that Cuba was sexually groping while she was taking pictures with him. He sent seven pictures, two of which Portland Police Detective Brendan McGuire referred to as "significant." The case was referred to the Portland District Attorney's office, which refused to sue, saying there was no evidence to support the claim and that there was evidence to disprove it. Cuba denies allegations of sexual violence. The NBA announced on March 8, 2018 that they were reviewing this issue.
