Dorsey was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, son of Marcia (nÃÆ' Â © e Smith) and Tim Dorsey. He is of British, Irish and Italian descent. His father worked for a company that developed a mass spectrometer and his mother was a housewife. She was raised Catholic, and her uncle was a Catholic priest in Cincinnati. She studied at Bishop DuBourg Catholic School.

At the age of fourteen, Dorsey became interested in shipping routes. Some of the open-source software he created in the field of shipping logistics is still used by many taxi companies. Dorsey attended the University of Missouri-Rolla for two more years (1995-1997) before moving to New York University, but he came out in 1999, one semester shorter than graduate. He first appeared with the idea he developed as a Twitter while studying at New York University.

While working as a programmer, Dorsey moved to California.

In Oakland in 2000, Dorsey started his company to send messengers, taxis, and emergency services from the Web. Other current projects and ideas include medical device networks and a "frictionless service market". In July 2000, build shipping and was inspired in part by LiveJournal and by AOL Instant Messenger, he had ideas for short messaging services/realtime web-based status.

When he first saw the implementation of an instant message, Dorsey wondered if the software user's status output could be shared easily among friends. He approached Odeo, who at that moment happened to be interested in a text message. Dorsey and Biz Stone decided that SMS text conforms to the status message idea, and builds a Twitter prototype in about two weeks. This idea attracted many users in Odeo and an investment from Evan Williams, who left Google after selling Pyra Labs and Blogger.

In his youth, he sometimes worked as a fashion model.

Careers

Twitter

Williams, Stone and Noah Glass founded Obvious Corporation, which separated Twitter Inc., with Dorsey as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). As chief executive officer, Dorsey saw startup through two rounds of funding by venture capitalists who supported the company. He reportedly lost his position for leaving work early to enjoy other activities, such as yoga and fashion design.

As services began to grow in popularity, Dorsey chose an uptime increase as a top priority, even more than creating revenue - which, by 2008, Twitter was not designed to produce. Dorsey describes the commercial use of Twitter and its APIs as two things that can lead to paid features. He describes three guiding principles, which he says are shared by the company, as simplicity, constraints and expertise.

On October 16, 2008, Williams took over the role of CEO, while Dorsey became chairman of the board. On March 28, 2011, Dorsey returned to Twitter as Chief Executive after Dick Costolo succeeded Williams as CEO. On June 10, 2015, Costolo announced that he was resigning as CEO of Twitter, effective July 1, 2015. Dorsey will assume the post of Interim CEO after Costolo's departure. He was named the permanent CEO of Twitter on October 5, 2015. On the day after the controversy about Twitter's new algorithm for tweets, Dorsey responded to the trend, saying it was just a hoax.

In May 2016, Dorsey announced that Twitter would not count photos and links within 140 characters to free up more space for text. This move is an attempt to attract new users, as the number of tweets per day has dropped to about 300 million in January 2016 compared to about 500 million in September 2013 and a peak of 661 million in August 2014.

On November 17, 2016, Dorsey tweeted a public apology for an automated system error that allowed "hate ads" to appear on Twitter in violation of Twitter user policies. The error occurred within a day after Twitter suspended some accounts associated with the alt-right movement.

On November 22, 2016, Dorsey was temporarily suspended from his own Twitter user account with 3.9 million followers. After recovering the account, Dorsey tweets the suspension due to "internal error".

In February 2017, Dorsey and Executive Chairman Omid Kordestan matched the $ 530,000 donation to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed by Twitter staff. Their match earned a total donation of up to $ 1.59 million.

In March 2018, Jack Dorsey announced that a verified version of the verification system would come to Twitter. The purpose of redesigning verification is to let people verify more facts about themselves, emphasizing proof of identity. This reshuffle may take place before the US midterm elections in 2018 and help verify candidate identity.

Box, Inc.

Dorsey, along with co-founder Jim McKelvey, developed a small business platform to receive debit and credit card payments on a mobile device called Square, released in May 2010. This small square-shaped device is attached to an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or device Android via a headphone jack, and as a mini card reader allowing someone to swipe their card, select the amount to be transferred to the recipient and then sign their name for confirmation. Square is also a system for sending paperless receipts via text or email messages, and is available as a free app for iOS and Android OS. The company grew from 10 employees in December 2009 to over one hundred employees by June 2011. Office Square is located on Market Street in San Francisco. In September 2012, the Business Insider magazine honored Square Inc. with a price of US $ 3.2 billion. Dorsey is CEO of Square, Inc. On October 14, 2015, Square filed an IPO to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. On that date, Dorsey owns 24.4% of the company's shares.

More projects

Producer Tom Anderson and correspondent Lara Logan interviewed Dorsey for the 60 Minutes CBS segment called "The Innovator: Jack Dorsey" which aired during March 2013. In 2013, speaking with CNN, Dorsey expressed admiration for Michael Bloomberg and rediscovery through the design and simple interface of what it means to be the mayor. Dorsey thinks being the mayor of New York City is an aspiration that will raise the standard for him. He served as a judge for New York City Major Michael Bloomberg NYC BigApps competition in 2011. Dorsey is an on-record donor to Democratic candidates.

Dorsey is announced as a new member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company on December 24, 2013. The press release calls Dorsey "a talented entrepreneur" and explains that his experience is aligned with the company's "strategic priorities". In January 2018, it was reported that Dorsey would not seek re-election at the March annual meeting of Disney, due to the increasing difficulty in avoiding conflicts of interest.

He is also a member of the board of the Berggruen Institute Government Center.
