IBM Global Business Services
IBM Global Business Services (GBS) is a Global Services professional service unit, including management and strategy consulting, system integration, and application management services. Revenue from Global Business Services is $ 13.5 billion by 2014.
History
The beginning of IBM's involvement in IT services can be traced back to at least until 1989 when Eastman Kodak Company and IBM completed an agreement with which IBM designed, built and managed a new state-of-the-art data center for Kodak in Rochester, New York under the trademark ISSC , Integrated Systems Solution Corporation.
Also in 1989, IBM introduced the Business Recovery Service, an offer that allowed a business to continue operations in the event of blackouts or unplanned disaster.
In 1992, the company established IBM Consulting Group, as a new management consulting organization with service lines in Business Transformation and IT Strategy Consultation. The initiative is led by Robert M. Howe, Vice President of IBM and General Manager of IBM Consulting Group. The group was renamed IBM Business Innovation Service in 2001, and then IBM Business Consulting Services. As management consulting becomes more intertwined with the delivery of more technology, integrated organizations become known as IBM Global Business Services.
In 2002, IBM Global Services acquired management and technology consulting services from PricewaterhouseCoopers, around the same time some other Big Four accounting firms sold their consulting arm (this is from strong pressure to avoid conflicts of interest with respect to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act). The PwC consulting business was sold to IBM for about US $ 3.9 billion in cash and stock. This is almost double the number of consultants in IBM Global Services, adding 30,000 consultants in 52 countries.
