HBO Go is a TV Everywhere service offered by the American premium cable network HBO, owned by a subsidiary of Time Warner, Home Box Office, Inc. This allows HBO subscribers to stream video on HBO content request options, including current and last series, movies, specials and sports events, either through the HBO website, or apps on mobile devices, video game consoles and digital media players. This service was first launched on February 18, 2010.

HBO Go is the successor to HBO on Broadband, which was originally launched in January 2008 to Time Warner Cable customers in Green Bay and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Programming content that is available in the service consists of 400 hours of HBO original feature film and movies (including 130 monthly movie titles), specials and original downloadable series to the computer, at no additional cost to HBO customers; to access HBO on Broadband content, the user must be a digital cable customer who has a subscription to HBO, and use their cable company as their internet service provider.

The service was launched nationwide as HBO Go on February 18, 2010, initially available through Verizon FiOS. Over the next few years, the service was extended to other providers including AT & amp; T U-verses, Comcast, Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, Dish Network, Suddenlink Communications, and Charter Communications in some states, as well as through Google TV.

At launch, services are only accessible on a personal computer through the HBO website. Apps for iOS and Android devices were released on April 29, 2011, making this service available on smartphones and tablet computers. This app has more than a million downloads in the first week, and is downloaded over three million times by the end of June 2011.

In October 2011, Roku's streaming player became the first connected television device to support the service, and availability was then rolled out to Apple TV, Chromecast, PlayStation console, Samsung Smart TV and Xbox console. Availability in set-top boxes and game consoles is determined by individual cable providers in the United States with some omissions. Currently the Communication Charter does not support Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV, and Comcast does not support PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Fire TV and does not support Roku players until the end of 2014. TV Sling subscribers who receive HBO through the service can not access HBO GO, because direct HBO feeds and on demand content is available through the Sling TV app. The same is true for PlayStation Vue customers unless they also have access to HBO Now.

HBO Now

On October 15, 2014, following a similar service trial at Nordic Europe, HBO announced that it plans to launch an over-the-top subscription service by 2015, which will allow "cable cutters", "cable nevers", and subscribers to the cable package the basis for subscribing to HBO without requiring a subscription to a pay-TV provider or to a premium package. This decision marks a significant change in HBO's business model, as the service will be marketed directly to consumers rather than through television providers. The new offer will primarily target "cable cutters" and "cable nevers", primarily using online video services, such as Netflix or Hulu, to stream video content and television programs rather than subscribe to cable television or satellite providers. The new service, HBO Now, was officially inaugurated on March 9, 2015 for launch in April of that year, with the support of an exclusive mobile and digital media player for Apple devices at launch.

Over-the-top service was launched in Latin America in June 2017, albeit under the name HBO Go.

Content

HBO Go flows a number of theatrically released films (through movie studios that maintain distribution agreements with HBO including 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures and network partner companies Warner Bros. Pictures) with significant titles added and removed from service each month. The original HBO series is available permanently. New episodes of the current series are usually available for streaming starting on their initial broadcast in the Eastern Time Zone on the linear HBO channel.

However, HBO Go does not carry several previous HBO series, such as Stories from Crypt , Tenacious D , 1 & amp; Ten , Arliss , Da Ali G Show , or The Ricky Gervais Show . Additionally, unlike TV Everywhere services offered by most other broadcast television and cable networks, HBO Go does not provide access to the real-time linear flow of HBO linear channels. (Max Go, TV Everywhere service from Cinemax sister premium service, also does not offer any linear channel television stream.)
