Green Mountain Energy Company is a US company that offers electrical products, carbon offsets, and "sustainable solutions" for residential and commercial customers. Green Mountain competitors include Reliant Energy, Champion Energy, Texas Power, TXU Energy, Gexa Energy, and Direct Energy.

History
Green Mountain Energy began in Vermont in August 1997 as a branch of Green Mountain Power to take advantage of electricity deregulation across the country. The company moved its headquarters to its current location in Austin, Texas, in September 2000. Green Mountain began serving the Texas competition market in January 2002 and was the first retailer to offer alternative energy in the state. In August 2009, Green Mountain Energy expanded into the New York City market, serving residential and commercial electricity customers in the Con Edison service area.
In November 2010, Green Mountain Energy was acquired by NRG Energy for $ 350 million. Green Mountain Energy has operated as an independent NRG subsidiary, but now operates as one of many NRG brands. With the acquisition of renewable offer from Green Mountain Energy, NRG becomes one of the largest green power retailers in the country. NRG gets 93% of its energy from burning fossil fuels.
Green Mountain Energy made national headlines in January 2011 by signing a two-year agreement to provide 100% renewable energy to the Empire State Building, making it the largest commercial green energy purchase in New York City at the time. The following year, in February 2012, the company partnered with the National Football League (NFL) to empower the Super Bowl XLVI with 15 million kWh of renewable energy. In June 2012, Green Mountain Energy expanded into Pennsylvania, serving residential and commercial electricity customers in the PECO and PPL service areas. By July 2013, Green Mountain Energy Company serves customers in all seven service areas of Pennsylvania.

Housing services
Green Mountain Energy directly caters to residential power customers living in a deregulated utility service area. These areas include Illinois , Maryland , Massachusetts , New Jersey , New York , Pennsylvania , and Texas. Green Mountain Energy also partnered with utilities in US-regulated markets, such as Portland General Electric (PGE) in Oregon, to offer renewable energy products to their customers. In addition, Green Mountain Energy participates in a multi-supplier utility partnership program in New York and New Jersey.
Products
Green Mountain Energy's flagship residential electric product is "Pollution Free Electricity", made from 100% renewable sources. Another product, "Pollution Free Gold", offers 95% PA-source wind and 5% PA-sourced solar energy for residential customers in Pennsylvania. This product also includes a monthly donation to Sun Club, Green Mountain program that donates solar energy to nonprofit organizations. Green Mountain Energy also offers renewable energy certificates (RECs) and carbon products are offset to individuals across the country. In May 2009, the company launched the Buy-Back "Renewable Renewal" program, which credits customers with renewable power generation facilities in their homes for excess energy, sending their facilities back to the power grid. In April 2011, the company also launched a solar rental program for residential solar panels.
In April 2011, Green Mountain Energy announced "Pollution Free EV", a 100% wind power product specifically for electric vehicle owners. This product can be used in conjunction with eVgo NRG Energy program for unlimited EV charging. In June 2013, Green Mountain launched a new product called "Free Pollution Free", which is the first and only 100% pollution free energy product paired with Nest Learning Thermostat.
Commercial services
Green Mountain has a commercial and industrial division that offers cleaner energy products to business customers in Texas, New York, and Pennsylvania. The commercial division started in 2004 and offers business customers the opportunity to reduce their CO 2 emissions footprint by purchasing renewable energy or carbon offsets. Green Mountain Energy Solutions is a new division launched in 2011, offering "sustainable business solutions" to national companies.

Updated facilities
Green Mountain Energy's customer demand has helped spur the development of more than 50 wind and solar facilities across the US, including over 35 donations of solar facilities funded by Green Mountain Energy Sun Club members (formerly Big Texas Sun Club). Green Mountain Energy also purchased 100% of renewable generation from Green Mountain Energy Winds Farms - Langford and Elbow Creek to supply consumers and their businesses. Together, these two West Texas wind farms can produce up to 270 megawatts (MW) of clean energy.
