History
FedEx Corporation is an import/export company, established October 2, 1997, in Delaware. FDX Corporation was established in January 1998 with the acquisition of Caliber System Inc. by Federal Express. With Caliber purchases, FedEx began offering services other than express delivery. Caliber subsidiaries include RPS, small-scale landline services; Roberts Express, an accelerated delivery provider; Viking Freight, a local cargo carrier, less than the truckload serving the Western United States; Caribbean Transportation Service, air delivery provider between the United States and the Caribbean; and Caliber Logistics and Caliber Technology, a provider of logistics and technology solutions. FDX Corporation was established to oversee all the operations of its original air companies and divisions, Federal Express.
In the 1990s, FedEx Ground planned, but later abandoned, a joint service with British Airways to have BA fly a Concorde jet supersonic jet to Shannon, Ireland with a FedEx package on board, and then FedEx would fly subsonic packets to point- their delivery point in Europe. Ron Ponder, a vice president at the time, was responsible for this proposed endeavor.
In January 2000, FDX Corporation changed its name to FedEx Corporation and re-branded all its subsidiaries. Federal Express became FedEx Express, RPS became FedEx Ground, Roberts Express became FedEx Custom Critical, and Caliber Logistics and Caliber Technology were combined to form FedEx Global Logistics. A new subsidiary, called FedEx Corporate Services, is formed to centralize sales, marketing, and customer service for all subsidiaries. In February 2000, FedEx acquired Tower Group International, an international logistics company. FedEx also acquired WorldTariff, a customs and tax information company; TowerGroup and WorldTariff re-branded to form FedEx Trade Networks.
FedEx Corp. acquired Kinko, Inc. privately owned in February 2004 and replaced it with FedEx Kinko. This acquisition is conducted to expand FedEx retail access to the general public. After the acquisition, all FedEx Kinko locations exclusively only offer FedEx shipments. In June 2008, FedEx announced that they would drop Kinko's name from their ship's center; FedEx Kinko will now be called the FedEx Office. In September 2004, FedEx acquired Parcel Direct, a package consolidator, and repeated FedEx SmartPost.
In December 2007, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service "while deciding" FedEx Ground Division may face tax obligations of $ 319 million for 2002, due to mis-classification of its operatives as independent contractors. Reversing the 1994 decision that allowed FedEx to classify its operatives owning their own vehicles as independent contractors, the IRS audited 2003 to 2006, with a view to assessing whether similar misclassification of operations had occurred. FedEx denies that irregularities in the classification have occurred, but faced legal action from cooperatives claiming benefits to be gained if they were classified as employees.
In June 2009, FedEx started a campaign against United Parcel Service (UPS) and Teamsters union, accusing its competitors of receiving a bailout in an advertising campaign called "Brown Bailout". FedEx claims that it signed a Federal Aviation Administration re-authorization bill, which would let some of its workers to associate more easily (and, according to the Memphis-based company, "could expose its customers anytime for local work stoppages disrupted by high-value shipping currents and high value "), the same as giving a" bailout "to UPS. Independent observers strongly condemned FedEx's words, claiming that it was a "misuse of the term". FedEx Express employees are governed under the Railway Employment Act.
On January 14, 2013, FedEx appointed CEO Henry Maier and FedEx Ground President, to take effect after David Rebholz retired on May 31, 2013. On July 17, 2014, FedEx was indicted for a conspiracy to distribute controlled substances in collaboration with the Chhabra Organization -Smoley and Medicinal Unggul. According to the US Department of Justice, "FedEx is alleged to have deliberately and deliberately conspired to distribute controlled substances and prescribed drugs, including Phendimetrazine (Schedule III); Ambien, Phentermine, Diazepam, and Alprazolam (Schedule IV), to customers who have no there is a legitimate medical need for them based on an unauthorized prescription issued by a physician acting outside the usual professional practice. "Representatives for the company competing for this claim, stated that it would violate the customer's personal right to refuse service and that" We are a company transportation - we are not law enforcement ". On July 17, 2016, the US Department of Justice's Office of Justice confirmed in a statement that they had asked US District Court Judge Charles Breyer to drop the charges but did not say why.
In April 2015, FedEx acquired their competitor TNT Express for EUR4.4 billion ($ 4.8 billion, £ 3.2 billion) as it looks to expand their operations in Europe.
