A face book or facebook is a print or web directory found in some American universities comprising individual photos and names. In particular, it indicates that this type of publication is distributed by the university administration at the beginning of the academic year, with the intention of helping students get to know each other.

History
Colleges and universities in the United States often publish official or unofficial books that include students, faculty, or their staff, along with limited biographical images and data. In the early 2000s, several face books were being published online offering a number of new features, including password protection, more detailed information, indexing and further search, and people's ability to upload and enter information and photos.
In early 2004, Mark Zuckerberg, a second-year student at Harvard University, made an unofficial online face book on the "thefacebook.com" website, the pioneer of Facebook services, out of frustration that the university's official online face book project is taking too long. The development of face books throughout the previous campus has been stalled by privacy issues, many of which became prominent in November 2003 when Zuckerberg was accused of breaching security and infringing copyright and individual privacy. Zuckerberg has created a website, www.facemash.com, which uses unauthorized photos taken from Harvard House's face book, using photos in the system to assess student attractiveness.
