High School Musical 2 is currently DCOM's most successful in terms of popularity and appreciation, setting the basic cable record for the most watched television program, as its debut in August 2007 was watched by 17.2 million viewers (counting sport, the record stands until December 3, 2007 broadcasting of the New England Patriots-Baltimore Ravens game on the sister company ESPN Monday Night Football, watched by 17.5 million viewers). The Cheetah Girls film is also famous for its success in merchandise and sales for its concert tour and soundtrack album. The first film in 2003 was the first musical film made for TV in Disney Channel history, and has a worldwide audience of over 84 million viewers. The second film is the most successful of the series, bringing in 8.1 million viewers in the US. The 86-date concert tour featuring this group was ranked as one of the top 10 best concert tours of 2006; The tour broke the record at Houston Rodeo set by Elvis Presley in 1973, sold out with 73,500 tickets sold in three minutes.

On May 26, 2010, Disney-ABC Television Group announced the launch of a new digital cable and satellite channel targeted at preschoolers called Disney Junior, which debuted on March 23, 2012. Disney Junior Channel - which is like Disney Channel (Although unlike Disney XD or the replaced Disney Junior channel, Soapnet), is commercially free - competes with other preschool preschool channels such as Nick Jr, Qubo and Sprout. The channel features programs from the Disney Channel's pre-school programming library and movies from the Walt Disney Pictures movie library. Disney Junior takes over channel space hosted by Soapnet - a cable channel owned by Disney featuring soap operas - as the genre's popularity declines in television broadcasts, and on-demand video growth, online streaming and digital video recorder, eliminates the need for linear channels intended for genre sinetron. Automatic Soapnet feeds continue to exist for providers who have not yet made a horse cart deal for Disney Junior (like Dish Network) and those who make Soapnet part of their lineup while adding Disney Junior as an additional channel (such as DirecTV and Cox Communications); After a period in which cable providers do not turn off the network immediately withhold it to prevent customer cancellation, Soapnet halts full operation on December 31, 2013.

The Disney Playhouse block on Disney Channel was previously renamed Disney Junior on February 14, 2011; 22 channels and Playhouse Disney branded program blocks outside of the United States renamed Disney Junior over the next two years, ending with rebranding of Russian and Chinese versions in September 2013. Disney-ABC Television Group previously planned to launch the domestic Playhouse Disney Channel in the US (which will serve the same target audience as Disney Junior) in 2001, but the planned network was never launched, despite the special Disney Play Channels being launched outside the United States.

Disney XD

Disney XD is a digital cable and satellite television channel in the United States, aimed at boys and girls (originally intended for young male viewers) aged 6-14. The channel was launched on February 13, 2009, replacing the predecessor of Toon Disney; it carries the action and comedy programs of the Disney Channel and former Jetix block from Toon Disney, along with some of the first originally executed programs and off-network satire. Like its predecessor, Toon Disney, but unlike Disney Channel's main network and Disney Junior channel sister, Disney XD operates as an advertiser-supported service. This channel carries the same name as an unrelated mini-site and media player on Disney.com, which stands for Disney Xtreme Digital, although it says that "XD" is on the channel 'Name has no real meaning.

Toon Disney

Toon Disney was launched on April 18, 1998 (to coincide with the 15th anniversary of the launch of the Disney Channel network), and is aimed at children between the ages of 6 and 18. The main network competitors are Turner Broadcasting/Time Warner's Cartoon Network and Boomerang, and Nicktoom/MTV Networks' Nicktoons. Toon Disney was originally operated as a commercial free service from April 1998 to September 1999, when it became endorsed by advertisers (unlike Disney Channel). The channel brings a mix of reruns of Walt Disney Television Animation and animation programs produced by Disney Channel, along with several third party programs from other distributors, animated films and original programs. In 2004, the channel debuted an evening block of programs aimed at children ages 7-14 called Jetix, featuring action animations and live action series. During the first year of Toon Disney in the air, the Disney Channel runs a sampler block from the Toon Disney program on Sunday night for interested customers. The network ceased operations on February 13, 2009, and was replaced by Disney XD, a channel aimed at children, featuring wider programming, with greater emphasis on direct action programs.

Criticism and controversy

Anne Sweeney, who was president of Disney Channel from 1996 to 2014, has been the target of criticism. Some critics disagree with a marketing strategy designed during their tenure, which has resulted in a tilted target audience of Disney Channel programs against teenyboppers, as well as a decrease in animation programming and enhancements in live action performances and made-for-TV movies. In 2008, Sweeney stated that the Disney Channel, resulting from its multi-platform marketing strategy using television and music, would be "a major profit driver for [Walt Disney] Company."

This channel has also dragged episodes (and even had to reshoot episodes) featuring material deemed inappropriate due to its humor, the episode time being aired with real-life events, or subjects deemed inappropriate for the Disney Channel audience audience. In December 2008, Hannah Montana's episode No Sugar, Sugar was withdrawn prior to the broadcast after complaints from parents who watched the episode via video on demand services due to misconceptions about diabetics and sugar intake (Mitchel Karakter Musso Oliver Oken is revealed in episodes that have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes). Part of the episode was subsequently rewritten and filmed again to become a three-season episode of "Uptight (Oliver's Alright)," which aired in September 2009.

In December 2011, Disney Channel drew episodes from two original series of network broadcasting cycles - one episode of "Shake It Up"/"Party It Up," and So Random! the episode of "Colbie Caillat" - after Demi Lovato (So Random! star) Sonny with a Chance series, treated for bulimia nervosa in 2010) for the jokes featured in both episodes (episode Shake It Up , in particular) that make the eating disorder glow. On May 17, 2013, the channel drew "Quitting Cold Koala", the second season episode of Jessie , prior to the scheduled premiere broadcast, due to parental concerns over the scene where gluten free diet character leads to him ridicule.
