The Director of the Central Intelligence Agency ( D/CIA ) is the legal office (50 USC Ã,§Ã, 3036) serving as head of the Central Intelligence Agency, which in turn is part of the United States Intelligence Community. Since February 2017, D/CIA has become a Cabinet-level position.
The Director reports to the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) and is assisted by the Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. The Director is a civilian/general officer/flag of the armed forces nominated by the President, with concurrent or nonconcurring recommendations from the DNI, and shall be confirmed by a majority Senate vote.

History
Prior to April 21, 2005, the Director of Central Intelligence (DCI) led the Intelligence Community and the Central Intelligence Agency. In addition, DCI served as an adviser to the President of the United States on the issue of intelligence and legal intelligence advisers to the National Security Council (NSC). On 21 April 2005, the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) assumed the role of Intelligence Community chief and main intelligence adviser to the President and NSC.
DCI's position was founded in 1946 by President Harry S. Truman; thus preceding the establishment of the Central Intelligence Agency (created by the National Security Act of 1947). After the end of World War II, the Office of Strategic Services was dismantled and its function was shared between the State Department and the War (now Defense). President Truman immediately recognized the inefficiency of this arrangement and created the Central Intelligence Group, which could be considered a smaller precursor to the National Security Council. The following year the National Security Act of 1947 created the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Council, while formally defining the duties of the Director of Central Intelligence. The task of DCI has been defined further over the years by tradition, congressional action, and the Executive Order.
